Obituary

Avelardo "Bill" Valentin 78, of Medford, NY passed away April 14th 2020 at the VA in Stony Brook.

Bill was a man who spent a lifetime in service to country and justice. He served his country and was honorably discharged as a Vietnam combat war veteran; Sgt. 1st infantry Division. He was an NYPD officer, Correction officer at Sing Sing, received FBI (certificate and) training as a hostage negotiator, and finished his career as a Captain in Corrections with 27 years at Riker's Island. He was known at Capt. Val, and was well respected by officers as well an inmates for being fair and compassionate.


Born in Moca, Puerto Rico to loving parents Genove and Antonia, Bill moved to NYC as a child and grew up in the Bronx with his sister Haydee. As a young man, belonged to a Doo Wop group and sang on street corners. Eventually fell in love with beautiful Evelyn Rosado (love of his life) before heading to Vietnam. They married when he came home, and were married for 53 years. They had children, grandchildren and loved to travel together and be with family.


Bill Valentin is survived by his loving sister Haydee and brother in law Manny, 4 children William, Eric, Debra, and Jessica and their spouses Claribel, Megan, and John; as well as 10 beloved grandchildren Jazbrielle, Vianca, Savannah, Evangeline, Angeleo, Opal, Victor, Taina, Eli, and Vanessa. He had many cherished nieces, cousins and family members. Over his many professional accomplishments, Bill is known as a man of fierce integrity and a family man through and through. That was his most cherished priority and legacy. He will be greatly missed.


During this difficult time, his funeral and burial will be private, with a future memorial to be scheduled.
